Most were born in Darvel or lived here. Others had left for England, Australia or New Zealand and served from the countries where their lives had taken them. Their connection to the town remained.

The individual records are based on the work of the late Les Pittams. He traced addresses, dates, family relationships, service details and connections to Darvel so that the memorial would hold more than a list of surnames.

His research is presented here as a living record. Blank fields, uncertain details and conflicting transcriptions are not concealed; they are invitations to keep checking.

The source introduction records 112 First World War losses. The surviving digital material currently resolves to 109 distinct biographical profiles. Three additional working entries proved to be duplicated or copied records rather than separate people.

We have kept that difference visible while the memorial and source records are reconciled. No missing name will be invented to make the totals agree.
