A hall for the burgh
Growth in the curtain and carpet industries helped Darvel become a police burgh in 1872. With no dedicated meeting place, the burgh council later chose vacant ground on the north side of West Main Street for a new town hall.

A building made
for public life.
Darvel Town Hall is a Category B listed municipal building on West Main Street. Designed in a neoclassical style and built in red sandstone, it was completed in 1905.
Its role has changed over time, but it continues to serve the town as a library, community events venue and home for a small local heritage collection.

A century at
the heart of town.
Thomas Henry Smith’s design
Architect Thomas Henry Smith created a balanced seven-bay frontage in red sandstone. A central arched entrance, balcony, tall windows, pilasters and a balustraded parapet gave the civic building a confident neoclassical presence.
A new civic role
The Town Hall ceased to be the local seat of government when Kilmarnock and Loudoun District Council was formed. It then continued as a public library and a venue for community events, meetings and performances.

The symmetrical frontage is arranged across seven bays. Five central bays project slightly forward, focused on the round-headed main entrance and balcony above.
Inside, the principal space is the assembly hall. Designed for an audience of around 200, it remains the setting for concerts, talks and shared occasions.
